Rosacea FAQs
What is rosacea?
Rosacea, or acne rosacea, is an inflammatory skin condition characterised by enlarged capillaries on the skin’s surface that give the appearance of permanent redness and flushing. Unlike acne, rosacea does not scar the skin.
What are the symptoms of rosacea?
Common symptoms of rosacea include:
- Constant appearance of flushing, or redness on cheeks, chin, forehead, and/or nose
- Enlarged and broken capillaries on the face
- Thickening of facial skin, particularly around the nose area
- Small bumps or pimples on the face
- Stinging or burning sensation on the face
- A rash that is confined to the face
- Red, irritated, or swollen eyelids
- Rough or dry skin
What causes rosacea?
The cause of rosacea is unknown; however, it may be related to an overactive immune system, heredity, and/or environmental factors.
What can trigger rosacea?
Rosacea flare ups may be triggered by extreme temperatures, sun or wind, exercise and sweat, spicy foods, alcohol, emotions, stress, certain skin care products, and certain medications. It may be beneficial to keep a diary to identify what triggers your rosacea.
Can rosacea appear anywhere on the body?
Rosacea typically affects the face. Some people may also experience rosacea symptoms on their ears, eyes, neck, upper back, and chest.
How is rosacea treated?
Depending on the severity of symptoms, a personalised treatment plan for rosacea must be prescribed by a clinician. The treatment plan may include:
- Oral antibiotics
- Topical creams and gels containing antibiotics
- Avoidance of triggers
- Laser surgery to treat enlarged capillaries
- Lifestyle modifications
Can rosacea be cured?
There’s no cure for rosacea, however the condition is manageable once diagnosed.
